1848 Henry “Box” Brown, an
escaping African-American slave who was shipped to freedom in
a 2’8” X 3’ wooden crate, arrived at the Mr. Clare Depot in
Baltimore. Boxed by abolitionist James A. Smith of Richmond,
Virginia, Brown arrived in Baltimore on the B&O and was
transferred to the Philadelphia, Wilmington & Baltimore
Railroad for the final leg of his journey to freedom. Henry
“Box” Brown arrived in Philadelphia twenty-six hours after his
departure and was retrieved by members of the Anti-Slavery
Society.

November
1829 The Carrollton Viaduct
was completed crossing the Gwynns Falls, 1.5 miles from Mr.
Clare. The viaduct had 12,000 perches of cut and dressed stone
with an 80 foot wide arch. It measured 312 feet long and 26.5
feet wide. Still in active daily railroad use, the Carrollton
Viaduct is the oldest railroad bridge in the world.
December 1829 The B&O tested a number of rail cars at
Mt. Clare including stagecoach bodies mounted on flanged
wheels, a "market cart" in boat-like fashion and a sail car
named "Hobus." Propulsion was tested with dogs, horses on
treadmills and hand powered cranks.
January 1, 1838 The B&O became the first Federal
government contract carrier of the United States Mail. By
1850, America's railroads were the principal carriers of the
U.S. Mail. Specially designed railroad cars called Railway
Post Office (R.P.O.) cars were designed enabling workers to
pick up, sort and deliver mail while the train was
underway.
